ur Universe, Ourselves, Our Place
Scripture and Science

We live in a universe filled with wonders, from the human body to the starry sky above. Our sense of awe and curiosity has led generations of people to ask the big questions about our universe, ourselves, and our place in it all.

What comes to mind when you think of the Bible and science? Perhaps you think they are completely different subjects. Perhaps you think of conflict.

The Bible, in fact, shares a long history with the study of nature in humanity’s quest to understand the big questions. At times, biblical beliefs about God and creation helped encourage people to study the world. They even influenced the rise of science as we know it today.

“The Bible played a significant role in the scientific revolution... and influenced the emergence of modern science in a variety of ways.”
Peter Harrison, Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, University of Queensland, 2016

This exhibition explores the Bible’s role in the historical relationship between science and religion. Many today believe that religious faith and the natural sciences are very separate subjects. Indeed, many consider the Bible to be an obstacle to scientific progress. Yet, for centuries, faith and the study of nature were very much entangled. At times, biblical beliefs helped encourage people to study the world. They even influenced the rise of science as we know it today.
